Legislative Committee

The Legislative Committee shall consider recommendations of the American Federation of Teachers, the AFT Pennsylvania, and the local pertaining to all levels of government. It shall study proposed legislation which may affect the Federation and the schools and may initiate recommendations.

Public education in Pennsylvania is deeply influenced by decisions made at the state level, and the current legislative landscape presents several important issues that directly affect our schools, educators, and students. From the ongoing need for equitable and adequate funding for public schools, to the impact of partisan gerrymandering on fair representation, to Governor Shapiro’s proposed budget and what it means for public education, these topics deserve thoughtful attention and discussion.

We encourage all members to make their voices heard by calling, writing, or emailing their legislators about these issues. Personal outreach truly makes a difference, and lawmakers need to hear directly from the educators and community members they represent.

If you’re not sure who your elected officials are, you can easily find them by visiting https://www.commoncause.org/find-your-representative/ or by using the Pennsylvania voter services website (https://www.palegis.us/find-my-legislator) Taking just a few minutes to reach out can have a meaningful impact on the future of public education in our state. Check your Action Network Email for more information about key issues and why they matter to the future of public schools across the Commonwealth.
